Description
Supplements: Gateways Cottage Originally built in 1921, Gateways cottage was named for its entry location to the historical Buck Hill Inn. After its completion in 1921, the cottage was described in the Buck Hill minutes as the "Gateways to the Inn", and so it was named. Gateways cottage was originally planned as a residence for executives working at the Inn. Its unique design was meant to accommodate 3 separate families 2 on the main floor and a third on the lower level. As the years passed the cottage fell into disrepair, and ultimately faced the potential of complete demolition. In 2006, the Councilor family purchased Gateways and made the commitment to fully restore the cottage to its original beauty. With the expertise of a local contractor, the restoration team was formed. While the stone exterior façade remains untouched, every other element of the cottage was painstakingly removed by hand and then replaced with modern technology. Every aspect of the restoration was designed to meet today's building standards. While the interior elements can boast a new life, the exterior elements proudly retain their timeless charm 100% natural fieldstone façade, multiple front porches and unique roof lines. As designed, the cottage contains more than 6,500 square feet of active living space. There are eight bedrooms including two master suites and a bunk room and a total of five full bathrooms and two ½ bathrooms. On every floor you will find a special place to spend time alone, as a couple or with a group. As the saying goes, it's not too big or too small, it's just right! The Buck Hill community is immensely pleased that the cornerstone cottage is again proudly displayed. Upon entry to Buck Hill, the stature of Gateways cottage evokes a sense of timeless wonder, a history restored, a special place for all to enjoy. We invite you to explore further for greater detail as the following pages will provide some insight on the past, the vision and the ultimate reality of the finished product Gateways Cottage. The Exterior: The original exterior stone work on Gateways cottage has seen only minor changes. The strength and durability of stone and mortar remain. However, after many years of neglect the roof began to suffer, compromising the cottage's interior. Years of water damage finally caused the structure to become unsafe and ultimately beyond repair. The roof was redesigned and rebuilt, all the windows and doors replaced and the front porches rebuilt. A 1,600 square foot deck was added for the convenience of modern living; its design sculpted around the lower patio for comfort and visibility. Landscape designs focused on natural products; stone slab steps, pea gravel walkways, fieldstone columns, shade and flowering gardens. A new driveway was added off of Rock Oak Road, flanked by two original stone pillars. This new access provides breathtaking views of the full dimensions of the cottage. With just under 2 acres of rolling property, there are countless places for everyone to play, relax and enjoy. > All exterior work performed by Bill Fisher of Ye Olde Village Workshop.
